Mongu, in Zambia’s Western Province, is semi-arid land with few chances to study and even fewer to dream big. Amos grew up there anyway convinced of something specific: that he wanted to become a doctor, and that he wanted to serve the very people he grew up among.
He’s an orphan, one of five siblings, and there was no relative able to cover university costs. Now in his second year of medical school, he’s three years from finishing — three years that depend entirely on sponsorship continuing.
His grades, by every account, are strong. That’s precisely what makes the thought of him stopping hardest to sit with. I keep imagining Mongu with its own doctor, someone who already knows the place and the people, if we can just get Amos to the finish line.
