As the Church celebrates the 58th World Day of Peace, which opens the 2025 Jubilee Year, Pope Francis makes a heartfelt appeal to all of humanity. Faced with the multiple crises afflicting our planet, the Holy Father invites us to listen to the “desperate cry for help” rising from many parts of the world.
The papal message emphasizes our shared responsibility in generating those “structures of sin” that oppress the weakest among us. Inequality, environmental degradation, rejection of dialogue, excessive military spending: these are all factors threatening the future of humanity. A profound cultural change is needed to recognize ourselves as children of God and debtors to one another.
In this Year of Grace, the Pope suggests three concrete actions to restore hope and dignity to entire populations: the cancellation of the foreign debt of the poorest countries; respect for life from conception to natural death, with the abolition of the death penalty; and the establishment of a global fund to defeat world hunger.
But the path to peace begins first and foremost with a disarmament of the heart. Gestures of sincere friendship and selfless service are needed to reach out to others and rediscover ourselves as brothers and sisters. Only in this way, the Pontiff affirms, can a new world be born, where justice and peace embrace.
The Jubilee that opens is thus a propitious time to courageously undertake paths of reconciliation and solidarity. The Pope’s urgent invitation is not to remain deaf to the cry of the poor, to overcome selfishness in order to take care of one another. Only a more fraternal human community can build the future of hope we all long for.
The 2025 Jubilee Year is an opportunity for profound personal and social renewal. By listening to the Pope’s appeal and putting it into practice through concrete gestures of compassion, we can all contribute to the birth of a more just and peaceful world. The path may be challenging, but it is illuminated by the light of hope that springs from faith in the God of mercy.
