At the transit camp in Lusaka, I met a refugee woman who had walked for two months to reach safety, arriving with crutches after being hurt while fleeing conflict back home. What should have been treated properly along the way has instead worsened over time.
She now needs surgery that the camp’s limited medical resources cannot fully provide, and the situation is urgent — every week without proper treatment makes recovery harder.
I think often about the resilience it takes to walk for months toward an uncertain future, and still hope for a body that can carry you there. That’s what we’re trying to make possible now: not just safety, but the chance to walk into what comes next.
