In the rural heart of Kaande, Zambia, lies an oasis of hope and resilience: the Mother Earth Center. This innovative project, led by the Comboni Missionary Sisters, is transforming the lives of local communities by providing them with tools to tackle the challenges of climate change and food insecurity.
During our conversation with Sr. Maria, we were captivated by the spirit of collaboration and determination that permeates every corner of Mother Earth. The Sisters work closely with the locals, teaching them sustainable agricultural techniques and providing them with alternative income-generating opportunities.
“Our goal is to empower people to become self-sufficient and thrive without harming the environment,” Sr. Maria, one of the project’s founders, explained to me. “Here, we provide them with the necessary tools and training to adapt to climate change and secure a better future for their families.”
One of Mother Earth’s most promising initiatives is the pig-breeding project. As she observed the construction of the seven pigsties in the surrounding villages, Sr. Maria was impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of the locals. “Thanks to this project, I will be able to generate additional income for my family without resorting to tree-felling,” commented Joseph, a local farmer.
Through workshops and training sessions, participants learn pig-breeding techniques, resource management, and good agricultural practices. Sr. Maria emphasized the importance of these activities: “We not only provide them with material resources but also the knowledge necessary to manage their farms sustainably and successfully.”
One of the most moving moments was witnessing the delivery of the pregnant sows to each of the villages. The emotion and gratitude were palpable on the faces of the beneficiaries. “This sow represents a new beginning for my family,” expressed Olivia, a mother of four, with tears in her eyes.
The Mother Earth project is an inspiring example of how collaboration and the implementation of sustainable solutions can transform the lives of the most vulnerable communities. At the end of our conversation, we felt renewed by the hope that initiatives like this can flourish around the world, sowing a greener and more prosperous future for all.
