Sudan has faced escalating conflict and instability in recent years, prompting many Comboni missionaries to leave the country. However, some who worked there for decades offer a message of resilience and reconciliation. Sister Annalisi Pansini describes the Sudanese as “a patient people, mobilizing in peaceful demonstrations” and admires their “spirit of adaptation to the most difficult situations.” Despite the traumatic violence that dispersed entire cities, she expresses certainty “the Lord always hears the cry of the poor and will come to the rescue of his people.” Other missionaries equally highlight Sudanese solidarity across religious differences and commitment to education as means for building peace. While acknowledging immense post-war challenges of trauma, displacement, and infrastructure loss, the missionaries convey hope that reconciled relationships and Comboni service will help revitalize Sudan.
