World Rainforest Day is celebrated on 22 June, a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of these unique ecosystems and raising awareness of the need to protect them. Rainforests cover vast areas of the planet and are home to an enormous diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms. Furthermore, they play a vital role in regulating the climate, as they help absorb carbon dioxide and maintain the balance of the water cycle.
Tropical rainforests are home to millions of species, many of which are still unknown to science. They are also essential to numerous indigenous communities and local populations who depend on their resources for their livelihoods. However, these ecosystems face serious threats such as deforestation, fires, overexploitation of resources and climate change, which endanger their biodiversity and the benefits they provide to the entire planet.
Celebrating this day is an opportunity to reflect on our actions and promote habits that help conserve tropical forests. Reducing our consumption of products derived from the destruction of rainforests, supporting conservation initiatives and recognising the importance of nature are small steps that can help protect these invaluable places. Caring for tropical rainforests means caring for life and the future of the Earth.
